The Kent Downs

About 25 per cent of Kent is covered by the Kent Downs, with a diverse landscape running from Dover right to the margins of London and Surrey. It has been a designated area of natural beauty for over four decades and hiking through it is a treat for all of the senses. It contains the types of habitat for which Britain is famous, including established woodlands, open planes and, perhaps the most quintessential of English countryside features, extensive hedgerows teeming with flourishing wildlife.

It is possible to hike for 153 miles through the Kent Downs, beginning in Farnham and ending at the White Cliffs of Dover. If you are not looking for a full hiking route, then there are hundreds of smaller paths that lead in loops around the main track. Historic villages, points of interest and thriving market towns litter the Kentish landscape and particularly keen historians will know that part of the Pilgrims Way, which was used by worshippers hundreds of years ago, is integrated into this route. If you fancy giving your legs a rest there are also interconnecting bridle paths and cycle routes to enjoy, depending on your personal tastes.

The Saxon Shore Way

The cross-country route through the Kent Downs is beautiful, but some desire to be beside the sea for fresh winds and arresting backdrops. The Saxon Shore Way is a 163 mile jaunt between Gravesend and Hastings in East Sussex. It tracks along the coast, following the ancient path taken by settlers and natives during the Roman occupation of Britain and, as such, weaves its way through various historical landmarks and areas. This includes a total of four forts constructed by the Roman invaders.

The Saxon Shore Way was opened 30 years ago, but it has been well maintained and intermittently rejuvenated, with extensions and alterations to the route. The Romans had been having problems with Saxon invaders and thus built strong defences along the Kentish coastline in order to repel any assault from the sea. The route offers excellent views and encompasses a number of key areas packed with wildlife.

If you have a family and are looking for rather less strenuous venues in Kent in which to go walking, then this is one of the many preserved areas which will allow you to get out in the open without having to commit to a long hike. Brockhill Country park offers a variety of routes lasting less than an hour. It also boasts a lake complete with islands and is a perfect hub from which to access other local hiking routes.

Most basic survival kits will come with small tools and items that aren’t that great.  They will work but won’t make you too comfortable.  The concept of things like fishing with small hooks and a line are a bit out there.  While it can work, it would be difficult.

The things that you need to focus on are the basics.

Carry water on you at all times as well as a way to purify water.  Sometimes this is as simple as some water tablets or a backpackers straw.  Make sure you have a way of purifying at least 50 gallons of water on you.

Get a good knife to carry.  This will help you in more situations than a small pocket knife will.  Some are made to carry extra items in the pouches for other items you might need.

Carry some waterproof matches as well as some lighters and even a flint.  These will give you multiple ways of starting a fire easier.

Get a basic first aid kit that you can carry.  Focus more on the items needed to fight infection as that is all you are basically going to be able to do.  Make sure you also have some pills that can knock out pain because with a broken ankle all by yourself limiting pain is one of your few options.

Always carry some food on your person when hiking.  This isn’t only good for a snack but will be something you can rely on when lost.  There are 3600 bars that are light and can be carried.  They will supply you with much needed calories and don’t require cooking.

Once you have your basic kit put together always have it with you.  Going as light as possible is typically the idea, but what is a few extra pounds really?  If the extra weight are from items that will make you feel more comfortable and safer giving you more of a chance to get out, it’s worth it.

Quaite Valley Campground: I know, I know. I already mentioned this one in another article. But, in my defence it’s the closest campground to Calgary that is both in the Rocky Mountains and easy to get to. It’s also got some great hiking and scrambling, and some even better Rock Climbing nearby at the Alphabit crag, or on some the extended ledges of Heart Mountain itself. Multi-day trips can be done by taking the valley all the way down to Barrier Lake. The picture here is a shot of the campground seen from one of the overlooking mountain peaks.

Bow Valley Campground: Just another 15 minutes drive down the Trans- Canada from Quaite Valley will bring you to the turn-off for the Three Sisters Parkway and the Bow Valley Campground. It’s a car camping site, as easy to access as it gets, and the location is on a beautiful stretch of Bow River. There’s plenty of fishing to be done nearby, and on a nice day you can also just sit and watch the canoers float by.

Lake Minnewanka Campground(s): Lake Minnewanka, at 28 km long, is the longest lake in the Canadian Rockies and there are actually five campgrounds arrayed around the northern rim of it. You can get to the western side of the lake by following Lake Minnewanka road (spoiler alert!: Lake Minnewanka road leads to Lake Minnewanka!) and the first campsite is a very easy 7.8 kilometres in on the well-maintained hiking/biking path. This is easily one of the most scenic camping areas in the Rockies, and the trails are usually pretty well clear by the middle of May. There are also five trail junctions that allow for some interesting multi-day trip possibilities.

The next phase in this hike is a steep series of steps. Here, the climb becomes more severe as hikers reach West Peak Mountain, before climbing all the way to the top of Mount Huashan. Despite seeming terrifying when you were walking up them, the steps will appear to be simplicity itself if you have just survived walking along planks of wood that almost appear to be floating in mid air. The end will be near and before you know it the entire experience will seem like a dream. Your perspective of danger and fear will have been completely transformed forever.

It goes without saying that no one, regardless as to their level of hiking experience, should attempt to climb Mount Huashan unless they have the appropriate mountain gear and equipment. Even then, however, it is still discouraged. Those who do brave this dramatic and emotionally painful ‘ride’ may have recurring nightmares about it for years to come. During this experience, the distinction between life and death is little more than the distinction between your left foot and your right foot. The level of concentration required is immense and no one can afford to become distracted, even for a second. In this hike there are a million ways in which a hiker could be killed, but only one way in which to survive – which is to embrace the fear.

Easy to set up, you just need a couple of trees, though I have heard of innovative people using other natural items when trees are scarce. But we live in the wooded Northwest, so we have plenty of trees. Comfortable. No sloping ground, or rocks or sticks in the back. Especially nice for staying off the ground in wet weather!
Lightweight. All camping hammocks I have seen are small and compact, great for hiking where weight is an issue.
Leave No Trace shelter. Unlike a regular tent where you may have to level the ground, use stakes or establish trenches in rainy weather, none of this is needed with camping hammocks. And the one I used came with wide webbing straps that protects the bark of trees, so no impact is there either. When using one of these hammocks instead of a tent, very little work is needed to insure a LNT campsite.

Most camping hammocks have one or two small pockets, just like a regular tent, for holding small items. And one thing I really appreciated about the camping hammock I used, is that there was a rope or strap that extended from tree to tree from which the hammock hung that was on the inside of the hammock with me. From this I could hang my watch, or better yet, a glow stick. Lets face it, it is dark! And waking up disoriented in a small space can be a little nerve wracking.
As I discovered, very unique. I was the envy of all the girl’s that year. Everybody wanted to try my camping hammock!

Cons:

If you are claustrophobic, these would not be a good idea. Though there is room between you and the top of the hammock, it is definitely a closed in space.
They are only designed for one person. This is often fine, but sometimes you want to cozy up in a tent with a loved one.
Having used one of these while at camp with a bunch of teenage girls, you do feel more vulnerable to practical jokes. I was lucky, and was spared any pranks, but I still felt at risk all during camp.

As you can tell, in my opinion, the pros outweigh the cons considerably. If you just need a tent for one person, camping hammocks is the way to go!

This summer we returned to a canyon in the Manti-La Sal mountain range and was surprised to see that not only were there even fewer places to camp but that more people were out camping. Of course, some of that has to do with the economy and people doing staycations. It seems nothing has changed in the number of places to camp.

We drove around for three hours before we ended up camping just off from the main canyon road. This is difficult for us since we like to camp with our dogs, plus it is also very dusty with the number of RVs going up and down the canyon. As we searched for a camping spot, we found that places we had previously camped were blocked by signs which read, “Closed for wildlife habitat.” Mind you, this range has over 1.4 million acres.

To give you a little history, in 1990 the population in Utah was 1.7 million. Today it has reached 2.7 million and our growth rate has more than doubled the rest of the nation. The projected population for 2030 is projected to be around 3.5 million.

Camping and hiking are activities enjoyed by 40 million Americans every year. It is the number one outdoor vacation activity. Camping participants made more than 597 million outings in 2008 alone. Also, one out of twenty US jobs is related to outdoor activities. Studies indicate that this industry generates roughly $730 billion annually and creates five times as many jobs as Wal-Mart.

To be fair, in Utah there are over seven-thousand improved campgrounds. Improved campgrounds are those you pull in close to other campers, but you have water hook-up, fire pits, etc. The problem for a number of campers is that what they enjoy the most about camping is getting out by themselves—away from the city, traffic, loud noises and enjoying the environment. You can’t get that parked next to other campers you don’t know who are playing loud obnoxious music and screaming in and out of the campground on their ATV’s.

Back in 2005, ATV sales were right around 900,000 units. I’m positive sales have increased since then as the sport as become more popular. However, the number of OHV trails has varied—some have been opened up and some closed. The concern about camping and ATV riding is the impact it is having on our environment, which is very understandable.

Designated campgrounds are those without immenities. This year they were so over-camped, they were practically dustbowls. You couldn’t find a piece of wood or a flower within a hundred yards. But isn’t the reason these areas are so over-camped because they haven’t accounted for the growing population and increase in outdoor activities? It’s true that blazing trails in restricted areas as destroying our environment, but opening up more designated trails based on the growing popularity of the sport may be a solution.

It is as important to plan and project further growth of this popular activity as it is to plan our freeway and highway requirements to accommodate our growing population. In 2007, the US had over 192.8 million acres. Utah currently has over nine million acres of forest land. Why isn’t it possible to provide more camp sites and still provide enough habitate for our wildlife.

By allowing us to see our beautiful country, won’t we learn to respect it more? Somehow there needs to be a balance between the environment and us.
